I am pleased to say we have some new rabbits in our rabbitry. As of now we have 3 brand new satin angoras and 1 brand new Holland lop.. The satin angoras were born from Celestial Farm's Frangelico and April. Now I need to mention that Frangelico (Frank) is a chocolate agouti and April is a REW. When these 3 kits were born I thought, "ok, I have two blacks and one chocolate agouti nice!" I posted their pictures in a Facebook group and my guess was corroborated by several satin breeders with much more experience than I. As the "agouti" kit grew, it started to look less and less like dad and more like I didn't know what. At that point I started doing some color research and after quite a while started to think that my little brown kit could be a chocolate chinchilla. I put a pic of the kit and sire side-by-side and posted in the same group, "am ia chocolate agouti like my dad?" It was cute. Soon I started getting responses and they all said chocolate chinchilla. I was right! My little cocoa kit is my first chin in my barn, I'm so excited. I also learned that it's black siblings might by black self chinchillas instead of regular self black. This could present an issue, but that is something to worry about later. I looked at the parents' pedigrees and learned that Franck carried the chin gene. April has a grandparent that was an agouti but because she is rew she is hiding ALL her colors. If Frank would have been bred to a colored doe the kits could have been shaded or carry the shaded gene. Because the dam is a rew, these kits will not have any shaded genes. I still have a lot to learn and am not really sure I completely understand what's going on with these kits, but I will keep everyone posted. Below is a picture of the chocolate's color changingin the first 2 weeks of life. |
